A word from Vice President Lori McDonald: Mar 2026

Each month, we take time to highlight the impact of our work through meaningful data and milestones. This month, I want to focus on something just as important — the people behind those numbers: you.

Our ability to support students depends on the growth, development, and well-being of our staff. That commitment to growth is reflected in one of our core values: life-long learning.

In Student Affairs, we believe learning doesn’t stop once we step into our roles — it continues throughout our careers and lives. When we remain curious, seek new perspectives, and invest in our own development, we strengthen our collective ability to serve students with excellence, empathy, and innovation.

There are meaningful professional development opportunities available at every stage of your career. You might engage with national professional associations such as National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) or American College Personnel Association (ACPA), connecting with colleagues across the country. Through the University’s Tuition Reduction Program, eligible employees can receive a tuition discount for courses here at the U. Additionally, the U’s Learning Hub offers a wide variety of accessible online trainings designed to support your continued development.

Professional development, however, is not limited to formal programs or courses. Some of the most impactful growth happens through conversations with your supervisor about your goals, volunteering for new projects, serving on committees, mentoring colleagues, or stepping into leadership opportunities.

I encourage you to reflect on where you hope to grow this year and to take advantage of the many pathways available. When you invest in your development, you strengthen not only your own journey, but the collective strength of our division and the students we serve.

Sincerely,

Lori McDonald
