When students turn to you: A new faculty guide to supporting student success

Faculty play a vital role in the student experience. Beyond teaching and mentoring, they are often the first to recognize when a student needs support, whether that means finding a sense of belonging, navigating a personal challenge, or simply knowing where to turn for help. To help faculty connect students with the right resources, Student Affairs has developed a new faculty guide that highlights the programs, services, and opportunities available across the division.

Student success is shaped by many factors beyond academic coursework. Research consistently shows that students who feel connected to their campus community, have access to health and wellness resources, and receive timely support are more likely to persist, succeed academically, and graduate. While faculty don't need to have all the answers, they often play an important role in helping students take the first step toward the right support.

Designed as a quick-reference resource, the guide is organized into three sections—Student Engagement & Belonging, Student Health & Wellness, and Support & Resources—giving faculty a simple way to identify the appropriate resources and referral pathways based on a student's needs.

Faculty have a tremendous impact on the student experience, and they shouldn't have to navigate every challenge on their own," said Lori McDonald, vice president for Student Affairs. "We hope this guide reinforces that Student Affairs is here as a partner, ready to help faculty connect students with the resources and support they need to succeed."

The guide also emphasizes that faculty aren't expected to know every Student Affairs program, service, and opportunity. When questions arise or the best next step isn't clear, the Office of the Dean of Students serves as a trusted first point of contact, helping faculty connect students with the support they need.
