Basic Needs Collective Joins Center for Campus Wellness

Basic Needs CollectiveThe Basic Needs Collective (BNC) has officially transitioned to be managed by the Center for Campus Wellness (CCW), marking a new chapter in student-centered support at the U.

Established in 2019 as a response to growing concerns around student homelessness, food insecurity, and financial instability, the BNC serves as a centralized hub where students could access critical support services all in one place. The BNC empowers students by addressing immediate needs while also connecting them with long-term resources for stability and success.

In the last year, the BNC reported through the Office of the Dean of Students as part of a broader effort to centralize and streamline student support services. As the university’s approach to student wellbeing has evolved, so has the BNC’s place within it—leading to its recent transition into the CCW.

“By joining forces, we’re strengthening our ability to meet students where they are—supporting their safety, healing, and overall success,” said Brittany Badger, director of the CCW.

BNC programming will continue under the leadership of Martha Hernandez, who will now report to associate director for advocacy services, Char Leary. The new alignment also allows for services and programs within the BNC to expand to include the re-development of the social work practicum internships and integration of peer wellbeing navigation within BNC services.

This change also allows for the CCW to more intentionally work towards a larger university goal of providing comprehensive wellness hubs for students to access the resources and programs they are looking for to support their academic success.

“Bringing our teams together means we’re committed to growing our collective impact while honoring the expertise and trust the BNC has built with students and campus partners alike,” added Sherrá Watkins, associate vice president for student health & wellness.

The BNC will remain in the basement of the A. Ray Olpin Student Union, however the CCW is exploring satellite locations as a way to expand reach for students. The CCW also has plans to bring over some of their additional services to the BNC’s Union location.
