Introducing Student Employee Insights: Tips, tools, and resources for student employees
On-campus student employment at the University of Utah is more than just a job—it’s an opportunity to foster growth, development, and success. With over 750 student employees and 500+ student leaders and volunteers, Student Affairs understands the transformative impact of these experiences on shaping students' futures.
This summer, as part of the Adapting to Student Needs strategic plan, Student Affairs introduced the SELFIE program (Student Employee, Leader, Fellow, and Intern Engagement). SELFIE is designed to make student employment a high-impact experience, equipping students with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed personally, academically, and professionally.
The SELFIE program focuses on understanding student employees' unique needs and reimagining how to recruit, hire, and support them. It also prioritizes:
- Streamlining processes and resources to make employment more accessible for both students and supervisors.
- Enhancing career readiness through structured training, mentoring, and professional growth opportunities.
- Improving outcomes and satisfaction by using data-driven strategies to refine programs and meet student needs.
Leading this program is Asma Hassan, the new student employee engagement specialist. In her role, Hassan develops monthly workshops for student employees, leads a monthly supervisor series, and collaborates with HR to improve hiring processes, professional development, and more.
"Helping student employees succeed has always been a passion of mine," said Hassan. "This makes it all the more exciting that my role will allow my student affairs colleagues and myself to create experiences for student employees and supervisors that are both meaningful and beneficial."
A key part of the SELFIE program is providing support that help student employees make the most of their experiences. To further this goal, Student Affairs is launching the Student Employee Insights, a series of blog posts featuring tips, tools, and resources for student employees.
The next blog post, will delve into the 2024 Student Employee Engagement Survey and share insights from the NASPA On-Campus Student Employment Survey.
