New Director for Clinical Services
The University Counseling Center (UCC) is pleased to announce Claudia Navarro will serve as the center’s first director
for Clinical Services.
Navarro previously served as associate director for Clinical Services for the UCC beginning in January 2022. Identifying as Mexican-American/Chicana, Navarro was the first woman of color to serve in this position in the history of the UCC.
“I am a first-gen professional and it honestly feels a little wild that, at one point, I was too intimidated to even apply for an internship at the UCC to now serving in a director role,” said Navarro.
Navarro graduated with both a Bachelors of Social Work and a Masters of Social Work from the U and has been a social worker for nearly 10 years. She has served students from elementary through higher education throughout her career, including as a social worker for Granite School District and various roles at the UCC since 2018.
This new director position will provide greater support for the expanded clinical services being offered by the UCC, overseeing all clinical operations within the center. The UCC continues to see an increase in demand and has implemented the Stepped Care Model in order to ensure students have greater access to a wider range of services to meet their needs including support and group therapy, single-session appointments, and skills workshops.
"Claudia brings significant clinical skills and experience to this position, having served in various roles within the UCC,” said Scott McAward, executive director of the UCC. “She played a critical role in the development and implementation of the Stepped Care Model and I am looking forward to working together to continue to enhance the UCC’s ability to better serve all U students."
The UCC has also created a director for Training, Programming & Outreach position. Susan Chamberlain is serving as interim director in this role until a permanent director is hired.
