New director of Fraternity and Sorority Life

headshot of Matt PhisterAfter serving as the interim director of Fraternity and Sorority (FSL) life since July 2022, Matt Phister has been named director of FSL, beginning Nov. 16. 

The Director of Fraternity and Sorority life provides supervision and support to the more than 100-year-old fraternity and sorority community on campus in the areas of program development, risk management, and the promotion of leadership. Phister will engage student leaders in the management and direction of operation sand programming while helping chapters to fully engage faculty, staff, alumni, and the community in the academic, social and personal development of their membership. The director is also responsible for the strategic direction and daily operations of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life, including the ongoing development and supervision of all staff.

Phister is originally from Northeast Ohio and attended The University of Akron, earning a B.A. in Political Science and later an M.A. in Student Affairs Administration from Michigan State University. Before attending graduate school, Phister worked at an academic non-profit in Washington, D.C. for nearly three years managing academic internship programs for undergraduates and law students. He previously served as a resident director for Lassonde Studios & Kahlert Village in Housing & Residential Education at the U, before joining the Fraternity & Sorority Life staff in January of 2021.  

Outside of work, Phister enjoys visiting local restaurants and breweries, spending time with his rescue dog, Sophie, and has a growing interest in tattoos and axe throwing.
