Impactful artwork
The Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs has a new painting thanks to a unique partnership with the University Union and Ayudame Guate, a nonprofit located in Guatemala.
Ayudame Guate helps feed and educate children who live in extreme poverty in Guatemala. The children, who are under the age of 16, learn how to paint with oil and acrylic. Justin Serrano, a maintenance and set-up employee for the Union, is from Guatemala and helps sell Ayudame Guate artwork in Utah.
With Serrano’s help, three paintings from the nonprofit were shipped to the Union and were on sale during its annual Strolling for Scholarships event. Half the proceeds from selling the paintings went to the Union’s Scholarship Fund and the other half went to support Ayudame Guate.
“I loved this painting right away because it reminds me of the red rocks of southern Utah,” said Lori McDonald, vice president of Student Affairs. “I’m so glad our purchase could also help support both students at the U and the mission of Ayudame Guate.”

“This partnership has been really successful for both the Union and Ayudame Guate,” said Jeremy Wilkerson, assistant director of marketing for the Union. “We will certainly be selling more art painted by the children who are supported by Ayudame Guate in the future.
